Carpet Calculator

Estimate carpet needed in square yards for any room. Carpet is typically sold by the square yard, so this calculator converts your room dimensions and includes padding estimates.

Carpet is the only common flooring material sold by the square yard instead of the square foot — a holdover from when carpet was made on narrow looms and rolled out in 12-foot widths. To buy carpet, convert your room dimensions from square feet (length × width) into square yards (divide by 9), add a waste factor for seam placement and cuts, then add padding underneath (typically the same square yardage, at much lower per-yard cost).

This calculator handles the conversion plus padding estimation. Standard carpet rolls come in 12-foot or 15-foot widths; widths above this require seaming. The 12-foot width works for most residential rooms because 12-foot rolls can be installed without seams in any room ≤ 12 feet wide. Wider rooms need seams, which require careful placement away from high-traffic and visible areas.

Carpet cost varies enormously: bargain residential carpet starts at $1.50/sq ft material; premium wool or commercial-grade nylon hits $10/sq ft. Padding adds $0.30-1.50/sq ft. Installation labor (stretching, cutting, seaming, tucking) typically runs $1-3/sq ft. So a 200 sq ft bedroom in mid-grade carpet runs $700-1500 fully installed.

Formula

**Square footage of room:** Area = Length × Width (in feet) **Convert to square yards:** Sq yards = Area / 9 (since 1 yd² = 9 ft²) **With waste factor:** Carpet needed = Sq yards × (1 + waste_factor) **Total cost:** Cost = Carpet sq yd × Price + Sq yd × Padding price + Installation labor **Worked example: 15 × 12 ft bedroom, 10% waste** Area: 180 sq ft = 20 sq yd. With 10% waste: 22 sq yd. At $30/sq yd carpet + $5/sq yd padding: $35 × 22 = $770 in materials. Plus install ($2/sq ft × 180 = $360) = ~$1130 total. **Carpet roll widths:** - **12 feet (3.66 m)**: most common, fits most residential rooms. - **15 feet (4.57 m)**: less common; some commercial and luxury rolls. - **6 feet (1.83 m)**: rare, for narrow hallways and stairs. **Standard waste factors:** - 10% for simple rectangular rooms ≤ 12 ft wide (no seams). - 15% for rooms 12-15 ft wide (one seam). - 15-20% for rooms with complex shapes, alcoves, multiple doorways. - 20% for rooms requiring multiple seams. **Carpet types:** | Type | Construction | Cost | Lifespan | |---|---|---|---| | Nylon | Most durable synthetic | $3–8/sq ft | 10–15 yr | | Polyester | Soft, stain-resistant | $2–6/sq ft | 5–10 yr | | Triexta | Most stain-resistant | $3–7/sq ft | 10–15 yr | | Wool | Natural, premium | $7–15/sq ft | 15–25 yr | | Olefin (polypropylene) | Indoor/outdoor | $1–4/sq ft | 5–10 yr | **Pile construction:** - **Cut pile**: most common; loops cut for soft top. Plush, Saxony, frieze, cable. - **Loop pile (Berber)**: uncut loops; durable, hides foot traffic but snags. - **Cut-and-loop**: textured patterns; hides traffic patterns. **Padding selection:** - **Bonded foam (rebond)**: most common, $0.30-1.00/sq ft. 6-8 lb density typical. - **Memory foam**: premium, $1-2/sq ft. Softer underfoot. - **Frothed foam**: dense, durable, $0.50-1.50/sq ft. - **Felt/rubber waffle**: traditional, $0.80-1.50/sq ft. Common on stairs. Match padding density to carpet warranty requirements (usually 6 lb density minimum, 7/16" max thickness).

How to use this calculator

  1. Measure room length and width in feet (round to nearest 0.5 ft).
  2. Choose waste factor based on room shape complexity.
  3. Enter carpet width (12 ft standard residential).
  4. Enter prices per square yard for carpet and padding.
  5. Calculator returns square yards needed and total cost estimate.
  6. For multi-room jobs, calculate each room separately to optimize seam placement.

Worked examples

Standard bedroom

**Scenario:** 12×14 ft master bedroom, mid-grade nylon carpet ($30/sq yd) + rebond padding ($5/sq yd), 10% waste. **Calculation:** Area: 168 sq ft = 18.67 sq yd. With 10% waste: 20.5 sq yd. Materials: 20.5 × $35 = $720. Install: $2/sq ft × 168 = $336. Total: ~$1056. **Result:** ~$1056 for new master bedroom carpet installed. Nylon offers best durability for the price; expect 10-15 years of life with proper vacuuming and stain treatment. Avoid Berber if you have pets (snags pull threads).

Whole-house carpet refresh

**Scenario:** 1200 sq ft of carpeted area across 4 bedrooms + living areas. Mid-grade carpet at $35/sq yd installed. **Calculation:** Area: 1200 sq ft = 133 sq yd. With 12% waste (multiple rooms): 149 sq yd. Total cost: 149 × $35 = $5215. Or with $4/sq ft installed = $4800. **Result:** ~$5000-5500 for whole-house carpet refresh. Whole-house jobs typically negotiate better per-yard pricing than single rooms. Choose stain-resistant treatment for areas with kids/pets — adds $0.50-1.00/sq ft but extends life significantly.

Stairs carpeting

**Scenario:** 14 stairs with treads + risers. Each tread ~10" × 36" = 2.5 sq ft. Risers 7" × 36" = 1.75 sq ft. Plus 2" on tread nose. **Calculation:** Total stair area: 14 × (2.5 + 1.75) = 60 sq ft = 6.7 sq yd. With 20% waste (stairs need careful cutting): 8 sq yd. At $35/sq yd installed = $280. Plus stair-specific install fee ($75-150). **Result:** ~$350-430 for carpeted stairs. Stairs need denser padding (8-10 lb minimum) for cushion. Professional install strongly recommended for stairs; mistakes are visible and dangerous (loose carpet on stairs is a fall hazard).

When to use this calculator

**Use carpet calculations for:**

- **Bedroom carpeting**: most common residential carpet location. - **Living rooms and family rooms**: warmth, sound dampening. - **Stairs**: safety, comfort, noise reduction. - **Whole-house refreshes**: replacing all carpet at once. - **Commercial spaces**: offices, hotels, conference rooms. - **Wall-to-wall installations**: traditional carpet over padding with tackless strips.

**Avoid carpet in:**

- Bathrooms (moisture causes mold). - Kitchens (food stains, spills). - Basements with moisture issues. - Entryways (heavy soil tracking). - High-pet-traffic areas (pet accidents, claws).

**Carpet selection by use:**

- **Bedrooms**: nylon or triexta cut pile for soft, durable surface. - **Living rooms**: nylon Berber or cut pile, stain-resistant treatment. - **Stairs**: dense nylon, low pile for safety and easy cleaning. - **Basements**: olefin (polypropylene) — moisture resistant. - **Pet households**: stain-resistant nylon or triexta with thick padding. - **Commercial**: solution-dyed nylon with anti-microbial treatment.

**Installation cost factors:**

- **Removal of old carpet**: $0.30-0.75/sq ft (or DIY removal). - **Furniture moving**: $30-50 per room. - **Stairs**: $50-100 per staircase additional. - **Stretch-in installation**: $1-2.50/sq ft standard. - **Glue-down installation (commercial)**: $1.50-3/sq ft. - **Seaming charges**: included in standard install for one seam; $50-100 per additional.

**Quality indicators:**

- **Density**: more fibers per square inch = longer life. Look for >2500 face weight. - **Twist level**: tightly twisted fibers stay upright longer. - **Stain treatment**: factory-applied protection lasts longer than after-market. - **Warranty**: 10+ year residential warranties indicate quality. - **Fiber thickness**: thicker yarn = more durable, hides foot traffic.

**Care and maintenance:**

- Vacuum weekly (high-traffic areas more often). - Professional deep clean every 12-18 months. - Address spills immediately. - Rotate furniture occasionally to even wear. - Use entry mats to reduce soil tracking.

**Lifespan expectations:**

- **Bargain carpet** (under $2/sq ft): 5-7 years. - **Mid-grade carpet** ($3-5/sq ft): 10-12 years. - **Premium carpet** ($6-10/sq ft): 12-15 years. - **Wool carpet** ($7-15/sq ft): 15-25 years. - **Commercial carpet**: 5-10 years (heavy traffic).

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying carpet by square foot pricing without converting from square yards. Common pricing trick.
  • Choosing carpet by color/look first without considering use. Cream carpet + kids/pets = disaster.
  • Skimping on padding. Cheap padding causes premature carpet wear and voids warranty.
  • Installing over uneven subfloor. Bumps and seams show through carpet.
  • Placing seams in high-traffic areas. Seams fail first; put them under furniture or in low-traffic areas.
  • Skipping stair installation pros. Stair carpet improperly stretched is a fall hazard.
  • Not registering carpet warranty. Most require registration within 60 days of purchase.
