Construction Calculators

Square footage, concrete, roofing, flooring, and building materials

Construction math is dominated by area, volume, and material-coverage calculations: how many cubic yards of concrete for a slab, how many sheets of drywall for a basement remodel, how many square feet of shingles for a roof, how many bags of mortar for a brick wall. Getting these numbers right matters because both underestimating (you run out mid-job) and overestimating (you pay for material you don't use) cost real money.

Our construction calculators cover the major material categories: concrete (slab, driveway, footing), masonry (brick, paver, retaining wall), roofing (asphalt shingles, pitch calculation, snow load), flooring (hardwood, tile, carpet, vinyl), insulation (R-value-based fill volumes), drywall, paint, wallpaper, fence, deck stain, gravel, asphalt, and topsoil. Square footage and pool volume calculators handle the area- and volume-based prep work.

Specialty calculators address less-frequent but high-stakes situations: stair stringer geometry, ramp slope (ADA-compliant or not), board feet for lumber pricing, lumber framing quantities, and HVAC sizing via the AC BTU calculator (using Manual J-style room load estimates).

Material-coverage figures use the manufacturers' published coverage rates: concrete at 27 cubic feet per yard, paint at 350-400 sq ft per gallon, drywall at standard 4×8 or 4×12 sheet sizes. We add a 10-15% waste factor by default for materials that come in fixed units (sheets, planks, bags), which matches general construction practice. For high-cost or hard-to-reorder materials (specialty stone, custom tile), increase the waste factor manually.

Local building code requirements vary substantially — span tables, R-values, snow load, wind load, and seismic requirements all depend on your jurisdiction. The International Residential Code (IRC) and International Building Code (IBC) are common starting points, but your local building department has the final say. For permitted work, the contractor or structural engineer is responsible for verifying that any quantities used in design or construction meet code; our calculators support estimation, not formal engineering submittals.
